Just Come Around and You Will See
(story written by minister Géza Geréb)
He drank since he was young. When his older colleagues sent him to buy a drink and he was allowed to drink together with them, he felt that it was like an honour. He did not think then that drinking is not even positive. He drank more and more and in the end he had to begin his days by drinking some alcohol.
He remembers a story: he noticed that one of his colleagues, an alcoholic, could hardly lift the glass to his mouth because his hand was trembling. He asked him, “What is your problem?” and the colleague replied, “I wish you’ll never know that!” And later he came to be in the same situation; he could not drink his morning portion, because his hand was trembling.
Some years later he became scared as he was looking at himself in the mirror, his face was bloated. He had a fear of death. He saw himself really very swollen. He cried many times, when he was alone in the bathroom, and he asked himself, "Who would take care of his youngest son, his fourth child, if he should die?".
Once, he was drinking in a bar when one of his friends, who also used to drink, asked him if he wanted to recover. He replied that not even God could make that happen. But his friend invited him to the support group that he was attending. He said to him, "Just come around and you will see if you want to belong to the group or not." He decided to go, and since then he has not been drinking anymore.
That first evening a woman was speaking about her life and she related that she was not drinking anymore, because her life had changed. He thought then, that maybe he would get a chance, if in the woman’s life this turned out well. That happened 10 years ago.
Since then, he has been happily talking about his life--in schools, in churches and on the street, knowing that this can help some people to escape from their addiction.
